The ladies group from my church invited my to tag along on a trip to Ponca City.
First stop.............
The 55-room Italian Renaissance mansion, thirty acres of beautiful vista and gardens.
Marland Estate Mansion.
In the courtyard to greet us is The Whittler.
The mansion is about 43,561 square feet spread over 4 levels. 55 rooms,
including 10 bedrooms, 7 fireplaces, and 3 kitchens. The ballroom will accommodate 300 people.
The room is crowned with a ceiling covered in gold leaf. To replace the ceiling and the Waterford crystal chandeliers today would cost $2 million.
This is the converted coach house where E.W. Marland (1874-1941) and
Lydie (Roberts) Marland (1900-1987) resided when they died.
Lydie was first wife, Virginia Marland's(1876-1926) sister's daughter.
The Marland's had adopted Lydie and brother George (1897-1957) in 1916.
Two years after Virginia's death, E.W. had the adoption of Lydie annulled
and she became his second wife on July 14, 1928.
Then, off to enjoy the beautiful Lester and Mary Cann Memorial Gardens.
In the court yard is this hugh tree. This is the site for many social events.
The flowers were absolutely gorgeous!
Even the garden cat was laid back in the cool of the shade.
Last stop, Standing Bear Museum and Education Center. A place where
Kaw, Osage, Otoe-Missouria, Pawnee, Ponca and Tonkawa Indian tribes come together
to honor Standing Bear Ponca chief.
